"Marry a Rich Man"

"Marry a Rich Man"

That’s what my father told me over and over growing up. He would follow up with, “It’s just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as it is a poor man.” His second piece of wisdom was “Go into sales, there’s money to be had in sales.”  The message was clear – money was good, money would make my life better. Maybe you heard a similar message. Or maybe you heard the complete opposite - money is bad, rich people are greedy or evil. Take a moment to pause here and think about the money values and beliefs you grew up hearing.

What you heard growing up is deeply embedded. As women, we’re so busy taking care of everyone else, we rarely step back to give ourselves time and space to stop and think about the money values and beliefs we grew up with. And yet, we are often making decisions today based on those money values and beliefs without even realizing it.

Have you ever had a fight with a loved one... over money?

Yes, most of us have. Money is very emotional. It intertwines with every aspect of your life. It impacts your relationships, careers, health & wellness, dreams, and communities. And yet, we don’t like to talk about it. Money is taboo. We’ll talk about almost anything else, but not money, with our friends, our family, our loved ones.

Understanding why we approach money the way we do can improve how we communicate with other people in our lives and reduce the control money can have on us. I believe there is tremendous benefit in taking the time to understand the values we’re carrying out in our lives.

It’s about our legacy that we are going to leave behind. Do we genuinely want to pass onto our next generation the same money values and beliefs we grew up with? Or is there something we want to change?

When you get home tonight or this weekend, ask a loved one what money values and beliefs they grew up hearing? What stands out in their mind? You might be surprised by what you what learn and the conversation it could spark. I’ve found that people love to share these memories given the opportunity. It’s just so often we abide by the money is taboo barrier and never initiate the conversation. I dare you to give it a try! I’d love to hear the outcome.
