Giving the Best Gifts

Are you protecting your assets?

Insurance and estate-planning are important components of your overall financial situation. I know, planning for a catastrophe and your own mortality aren't exactly fun topics.

Prepare for the Unexpected

The best analogy I’ve heard with regards to insurance is a comparison to a toilet plunger.  You don’t buy a plunger hoping to use it.  You buy it in case your toilet backs up unexpectedly and you are then really happy you have it.  Insurance is similar. You buy it in case something catastrophic happens – your house burns down, you or a family member are in a car accident.

Women have additional reasons for needing the appropriate insurance.  We live longer, we outlive our husbands, we have a higher probability of spending time in a nursing home, we’re at increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Not exactly uplifting news, but unfortunately, true.

Take some time to review the insurance you currently have in place. As our stage of life changes, so do our insurance needs. There are some basics that we all require like health, auto (if you have a vehicle) and homeowner/renters insurance. There are other protections that will vary depending on your particular situation.

Examples of other types of insurance coverage could be life, disability, umbrella liability, long term health care, prescription drug, pet to name a few.

Create a Lasting Legacy

Don’t send your family on a scavenger hunt at your death. I’ve seen this all too often. Either the necessary planning hasn’t taken place or nobody has been informed of the details. Your loved ones will be grieving, don’t put this unnecessary stress on top of that. Take the time to get everything organized. Then talk to the people who need to know. Tell them your plans and wishes. Tell them where they can find the documents and information when the time comes. Be prepared.

Have you done the appropriate estate planning for your life stage and wealth level? Or do you have additional items to tackle? I know this isn’t a fun thing to think about. But providing a road map for your family will give you peace of mind knowing that your wishes will be carried out. And it will make things easier on your family when the time comes.

Your estate plan isn’t a one and done document. It changes over time. As your life changes. Review your documents periodically.

Conclusion

Take the time to make sure you have the appropriate insurance coverage. Don't let an unexpected event wipe you out.

Be thoughtful about what you want to have happen after you're gone. Don't leave your loved ones to guess.

These are wonderful gifts you can give your family.
